Bethesda and Tango Gameworks delay Ghostwire: Tokyo to 2022 Leave a comment

Ghostwire: Tokyo, the next game from The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, won’t make its previously scheduled release date. Originally expected in 2021, the game has been delayed to sometime in “early 2022,” the studio announced Tuesday in a statement posted to the game’s official Twitter account.

“We want to get the game in your hands as soon as possible so you can experience the unforgettable version of a haunted Tokyo that we’ve been hard at work building,” the developer said. “At the same time, we’re also focused on protecting the health of everyone at Tango. Our new release window will give us time to bring the world of Ghostwire to life as we’ve always envisioned it.”

Tango Gameworks said it will show more of Ghostwire: Tokyo “in the coming months.”

Ghostwire: Tokyo was first announced in 2019 at publisher Bethesda Softworks’ E3 press event. The modern-day horror game garnered attention not just for its developer pedigree, but due to former creative director Ikumi Nakamura’s charming on-stage presence. Nakamura has since left the project and Tango.

The story of Ghostwire: Tokyo involves strange disappearances in Tokyo; it’s up to the player to uncover the source of that phenomenon and “purge the city of a strange, new evil.” Players will wield spectral abilities as they face an occult threat and unravel conspiracy theories and urban legends, according to the game’s official description.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is, like Arkane Studios’ Deathloop, a timed PlayStation 5 exclusive that’s also coming to Windows PC. An October 2021 release window was revealed earlier this year by Sony Interactive Entertainment, but Ghostwire: Tokyo never had a firm announced release date.

Tango Gameworks was founded in 2010 by former Capcom employee Shinji Mikami. The team released The Evil Within in 2014 and The Evil Within 2 in 2017 through parent company Bethesda Softworks, which is now owned by Microsoft.
